NLJ Names Ron Kirk One of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in U.S.
DALLAS (June 10, 2008) — The National Law Journal has named Vinson & Elkins Partner Ron Kirk as one of the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.
The prestigious legal weekly newspaper describes Mr. Kirk, who joined the firm in 2005 and was the first African-American Mayor of Dallas, as a "leading public policy lawyer" in Texas, pointing to his work on Vinson & Elkins' representation of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company and The Texas Pacific Group in their $45 billion leveraged buyout of energy utility TXU in 2007. Mr. Kirk also is co-chair of COMPETE, a national coalition of major energy companies promoting competitive electricity markets through deregulation.
Mr. Kirk was a leader of V&E's pro bono Jury Project, which successfully lobbied the Texas Legislature to increase pay for jurors in 2005 from $6 to $40. It was the first pay increase for Texas jurors in 52 years. The former mayor also is co-chair of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign in Texas.
Besides Mr. Kirk, the NLJ also named former U.S. Solicitor General Drew Days, former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder, Chevron Corp. General Counsel Charles James, and General Mills General Counsel Roderick Palmore among the 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in the U.S.
